Implementing a scalable, secure remote IT support solution with Out-of-Band management to reduce downtime and enhance proactive troubleshooting for public officers.
Public officers and VIPs working remotely or overseas at times experience critical device issues, such as continuous rebooting due to blue screens, incompatible drivers, and patch failures. These issues can render devices inoperable, disrupting essential tasks and causing significant productivity losses.
Currently, the IT support framework lacks the necessary tools to provide effective remote troubleshooting in such scenarios. When a device encounters a critical failure, users may be forced to travel back to the office to receive IT support, resulting in wasted time and operational inefficiencies. In the worst-case scenario, overseas users may face an even greater challenge, as remote troubleshooting is entirely unfeasible, leaving them without a functional device for an extended period.
Our team conducted interviews with various stakeholders, including the Endpoint Support team, Premium Support Engineer, and Agency Endpoint Ops team, to gain insights into their challenges. We compiled a list of these challenges and prioritized them based on severity and impact. The most critical issue identified was providing remote support for users who are overseas or facing complex laptop issues, such as blue screens or unbootable scenarios. To address this, we brainstormed potential remote support tools that could be implemented on our endpoint devices. Additionally, we conducted in-depth research on Out-of-Band (OOB) management to explore its feasibility as a solution.
The lack of an out-of-band (OOB) management solution also places additional strain on IT support teams, who are limited in their ability to resolve issues proactively. This gap in remote IT support highlights the need for a scalable and secure solution that enables real-time troubleshooting and device recovery, regardless of user location.
We aim to utilize the Intel vPro platform, which is currently embedded in our PCBT-based devices deployed across the Whole-of-Government (WOG) space. Intel vPro offers built-in security features that enable modern manageability and stability, which meet the need for enhanced IT support capabilities.
At the core of this solution is Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT), which provides remote management capabilities independent of the operating system. These hardware-based remote monitoring and management (RMM) functionalities ensure persistent connectivity, allowing IT support teams to troubleshoot devices even when the OS is unresponsive.
Reduced Device Downtime: By enabling remote troubleshooting and recovery, OOB management significantly minimizes productivity losses for remote users, ensuring seamless work continuity.
Cost Savings: The ability to resolve endpoint issues remotely eliminates the need for users to travel back to the office for IT support, reducing operational costs.
Enhanced IT Efficiency: IT teams can efficiently diagnose and resolve device issues in real-time without requiring physical intervention, improving overall response time and service quality.
Scalability Across WOG: Scaling this solution across the WOG space will lead to substantial productivity gains, reducing the number of trips required for in-person IT support by 20%.
To validate the effectiveness of OOB remote support capabilities, we will conduct a Proof of Concept (POC) with a small-scale setup. This POC will assess the IT support team’s ability to diagnose complex issues and apply their knowledge in remote troubleshooting. Upon successful validation, we will progressively expand remote IT support capabilities to more agencies, ensuring a scalable and efficient solution for the broader WOG ecosystem.
Secure Assist was conceived by the Infrastructure and Security team with the goal of elevating endpoint device support capabilities to the next level.
