Problem Statement & Problem Formulation Process

Imagine a world where a simple wave of your hand open doors, grants > access to secure areas, and effortlessly pays your train fares — no cards, no phones, no friction. JUST YOU

The Challenge

Built environments often suffer from inefficient access control and user authentication processes, leading to delays and frustration. Traditional methods like cards or mobile devices can be easily lost, forgotten PINs, compromised, or run out of battery, hindering seamless access and delays.

Problem Formulation Process

To refine the problem, our team:

  1. Validated with Stakeholders to confirm real-world relevance of the problem in built environments
  2. Validated the dual-use case (access control + payments) has actual market demand
  3. Validated Technical Progress to identify specific technical components needed for implementation

Our Solution: PalmPass

PalmPass is an operational technology solution designed for seamless onboarding, with an additional web page that enables users to register their payment method. The system utilizes a palm vein scanner integrated with a gantry to trigger its opening and a payment gateway for automated fare deduction.

Key Features

  • Frictionless & Non-Intrusive Scanning – Users should be able to hover their hand (without touching) for a seamless experience.

  • Building & Facility Access Integration – Seamlessly integrate with smart locks, turnstiles, and access gates for offices, residential buildings, and secure areas

  • Seamless Payment Processing - Enable tap-to-pay using palm vein biometrics at POS terminals, vending machines, and e-commerce checkouts.

  • Interoperability with Existing Systems – Ensure compatibility with NFC, RFID, and mobile authentication for a hybrid security approach.

  • Fast & Frictionless Enrollment – Enable quick biometric registration via kiosks, mobile apps, or enterprise portals.

Impact & Outcomes Analysis

To measure the impact of PalmPass, we will track:

  1. Ease of onboarding

  2. Ease of use, convenience

  3. Fast gantry clearance using palm vein

  4. Correct deduction from user payment method

  5. Able to identify user correctly with no false positives

Future Steps

  1. Test palm vein device to trigger the gantry to open

  2. Test onboarding of users biometric and payment method

  3. Test cloud integration to check if user exists with valid payment method in database before opening gantry

  4. Test fare deduction from user payment method
