Project Description

Youth suicide prevention starts from young

In Singapore, suicide has tragically become the leading cause of death among youths aged 10 to 29 over the past five years. Coupled with this, around one in three young people (aged 15 to 35) report experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or stress. The mental health landscape for our youth is increasingly fragile, influenced by the pressures and uncertainties of modern life. To combat this pressing issue, we believe in the power of prevention. Our goal is to equip parents with the tools and knowledge they need to raise emotionally and mentally resilient children before they even reach adolescence.

Parents: willing, but struggling

Through our research, we discovered that parents of young children are deeply invested in their kids' mental and emotional well-being. However, they often face a daunting array of challenges:

  • Juggling Responsibilities: Balancing their own stress and time constraints while being attentive parents
  • Navigating Tough Behaviors: Managing difficult behaviors and instilling discipline
  • Identifying Emotional Needs: Recognizing signs of anxiety or emotional distress and nurturing self-esteem and confidence
  • Lack of information: Understanding the best practices for raising healthy, resilient children
  • External Influences: Contending with the impact of schools, family dynamics, and media on their children

In their quest for guidance, many parents turn to social media, online resources, and personal networks. Unfortunately, they often hit roadblocks that hinder their ability to find effective support:

  • Time Constraints: Long articles can feel overwhelming, and information is often scattered across various platforms, making it difficult to find relevant information
  • Credibility Concerns: It's tough to determine which sources are trustworthy, especially when research can be biased
  • Generic Advice: Broad guidelines often miss the unique needs of each child, leaving parents wanting more practical solutions
  • Ineffective Search Results: Online searches can lead to a sea of inconsistent or unhelpful information

Our Goal

Our goal is clear: to empower parents with accessible, personalized parenting advice that boosts their confidence in raising emotionally resilient children.

Problem Statement

Gen Z and Millennial parents in Singapore are on the lookout for personalised parenting advice and techniques to nurture their children's emotional and mental resilience. However, the current resource landscape is fragmented, time-consuming to consume, and often generic, leading to overwhelmed parents, reduced parenting confidence and missed opportunities to educate their child.

Our Solution

We believe that if parents have easy access to personalized, user-friendly parenting advice, they will feel more equipped and confident in fostering emotional resilience in their children, allowing them to seize valuable teaching moments.

While platforms like ChatGPT provide general parenting advice, they often lack the personalized touch that parents want. Responses can be broad and fail to consider cultural nuances that are vital in a Singaporean context.

To fill this gap, we've developed an innovative Telegram-hosted chatbot designed to deliver tailored parenting advice in a friendly and accessible format. Here's what our solution offers:

  • Easy Access via Telegram: Many users already have Telegram, making it simple to connect without downloading a new app
  • Personalized Onboarding: Our onboarding process gathers essential background information about parents and their children, ensuring tailored responses
  • Custom Source Preferences: Parents can choose their preferred information sources—be it scientific articles, podcasts, or expert opinions—right from the start
  • Targeted Information: The chatbot curates specific resources that relate directly to each query, considering the unique parent-child context for more relevant advice
  • Query History: By retaining past interactions, the bot can refine future responses, ensuring ongoing relevance
  • Insightful Summaries: Parents receive regular summaries of their interactions, providing valuable insights into their parenting journey
  • Nurturing Coach: The bot delivers advice in a warm, nurturing tone to empower and affirm parents on their parenting journey

Impact

Incorporating parents' background information into prompts ensured more personalized and relevant parenting advice. Parents found that the chatbot not only expanded their options for finding more information on parenting, but that it was more convenient and helpful than other options, such as through Googling, searching social media and reading books.

Next Steps

We plan to:

  • Validate the market need of prototype with more parents
  • Validate the effectiveness of the prototype with more parents over a longer test period
  • Consult experts on effective strategies on equipping parents to raise mentally / emotionally resilient children to inform product roadmap
  • Further engage the business/policy owner to understand existing research and effort in this space to plan for the next phase of the product
